The 1.5-mile Bodenburg Butte trail is the most popular local hike in the Mat-Su Valley. Due to its unique granite summit, hikers are rewarded with breathtaking 360-degree views of Knik Glacier, Pioneer Peak and farmland. Where else in the country can you see both glaciers and farmland from the top of a mountain? Great Land Trust wants to ensure that future generations of Alaskans are able to have this experience and relationship with this special place. To do this, GLT has launched a campaign to “Buy the Butte,” specifically the 40 acres at the summit that are currently in private ownership by the Mental Health Trust Authority. Once we can make the purchase we will donate it to the Mat-Su Borough but hold a conservation easement to ensure its permanent protection.
